Chapter Eight
Roxanne awoke to the sensation of a warm cloth being rubbed against the bottom of her foot. Sitting up slightly, she noticed the covers had been pulled to the bottom of the bed, and the huge black and brown wolf she’d seen earlier stood on the end of the bed, licking the sole of her foot. Scared to even take a breath, she reached for Rafe. When her hand met empty space, she willed herself not to panic.
With each brush of the wolf’s tongue, her foot tingled, the sensation overshadowing the pain from the cuts. Now that the storm had passed, the moon’s light shone through the windows, giving her plenty of light to see the wolf as he bent down over her foot.
Her heart raced at his large size and the knowledge of the damage he could inflict if he chose. Biting her lip, she debated what to do. She’d heard an old wives tale that a dog’s saliva had healing properties in it. Wolves were like dogs, right?
Propping herself up on her elbows, Roxanne let the wolf clean her wounds. What else could she do? As if sensing her watching him, the massive animal stopped licking and raised his head. His steady gaze locked with hers before he bent his head and began to lick her other foot.
Roxanne lay back, strangely soothed by the gentle cadence of his movements. He shifted and his tongue began to bathe her calf. What could he possibly like about her calf? She had no wounds there. When the wolf’s tongue laved the side of her leg, she slightly bent her knee, not sure what to do. When his tongue brushed the back of her knee, she opened her eyes and tensed at the achy feeling that gathered in her sex. No man had ever bothered to lick the back of her knee. And damnit, leave it to a wolf to discover such an erogenous zone.
The wolf took a step and lapped at her inner thigh in long, leisurely strokes. Okay, that was too close for comfort. Roxanne started to back away, but the wolf suddenly gave a low warning growl, deep in his throat. ‘Don’t move an inch,’ he seemed to be telling her.
She met his gaze and froze as he took the few steps to the top of the bed, caging her in.
Fear pumped through her, causing her heart to race as the wolf bent and rubbed his nose against her neck gently. Roxanne closed her eyes in shame that she found his physical touch so arousing. But the sensible part of her kicked in and she held herself perfectly still while she gave a silent prayer that he didn’t suddenly decide to have her for a late night snack. When the wolf’s body begin to shake above her, Roxanne opened her eyes to see Rafe poised over her, his hair damp, and his naked body covered in a sheen of sweat.
Holy Cow, talk about Wolfman Jack! The man could shift to a wolf’s form? Shock rocked through her.
